Today is officially ‘Quitter’s Day’ – the day when the majority of people have given up on any New Year Resolutions they made. If that’s you, and you’re looking for some structure and purpose to build the rest of the year around, it might be worth exploring further education opportunities that are available locally.
Having been established over 130 years ago, London South Bank University (LSBU) is a well-known institution. But its newest campus, located in Croydon’s historic Electric House building, is a lesser-known higher educational gem.
Opened in 2022, LSBU Croydon offers undergraduate degrees in Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Chiropractic, Accounting & Finance and Business Management and prides itself on ensuring “students graduate with the skills and experience to make them real world ready”. Degrees are all professionally accredited, designed in partnership with employers, and taught by academics who are experts in their field. Part Time Study and Employer Sponsored Study options are also available.
Since opening, it has secured various educational accolades including being highly commended as an ‘Outstanding Entrepreneurial University’ in 2022 and ranking 8th in the world for ‘Reducing Inequalities’ (Times Higher Education).
With a campus designed around how learners want to learn (including flexible and agile learning environments, digitally focused teaching rooms, informal study spaces for group work and a library where students can access dedicated resources and support) going back to school has never looked so good!
Local Croydon residents who are keen to improve their employability prospects or train for a new career, should sign up for an Open Day (the next one is on Saturday 9th March) or join a monthly Campus Tour. These are a great way to find out more about life as an LSBU Croydon student as attendees will learn about the various degrees on offer, meet the academic team, view the state-of-the-art facilities and speak to current student. There are plenty of opportunities to ask questions too – with dedicated 1-to-1 drop-in sessions with course teams.
While courses start in September 2024, the early deadline to apply through UCAS is 31st January 2024. Anyone who submits their application before the January deadline will find out if their application has been successful by the end of March. If you have any questions or need support with applying, you can call 020 7815 7500 or submit an enquiry online.
For locals who aren’t so keen on going back to the books (!) there are various other facilities in the building that non-students can benefit from. These include a co-working space, business advice and a chiropractic clinic.
The Co-working Space currently provides 15 local businesses with an office hub, meeting rooms, business support and training opportunities.
Solutionise is a multidisciplinary collaboration between students from the Business, Law, Computer Science and Engineering degree courses who offer FREE business and law support to local business start-ups and SMEs. They run a weekly advice clinic open to any local businesses.
The LSBU Croydon Chiropractic Clinic is run by experienced fourth year Chiropractic Integrated Masters students and offers affordable Chiropractic treatment (around £25 per session) to the local community. Student clinicians are trained to take medical history, offer a diagnosis and recognise any health issues that might need to be referred for other types of care, all under the supervision and guidance of experienced General Chiropractic Council registered chiropractors.
