Croydon BID bringing Christmas to the High Street

It’s no secret that High Streets across the UK have struggled over recent years and here in Croydon has been especially tough. But in a BID to save Christmas (sorry, we couldn’t resist!), the Croydon BID is putting on a HUGE range of activities over the coming weeks to encourage people back into the Town Centre to eat, shop and have some festive fun with friends and family.

The BID (or Business Improvement District) is a privately funded organisation who aim to help Croydon “become one of the most sustainable, welcoming, vibrant and culturally diverse locations in south London in which to do business, work, live and visit”. Their work includes a wide range of projects and initiatives such as their recent Monster Invasion that brought smiles to local kids and big kids alike!

Their Christmas plans include:

A Christmas Street Celebration
This all day event will take place across the town centre on Saturday 4th December. It will include a theatre from which a Storyteller, will give regular 20 minute performances and entertaining children with immersive festive stories. There will also be a selection of performers from Covent Garden Street Entertainers (including the much loved ‘Groovy Guy’ and ‘Bumbulum’!) There will also be live Christmas music from Endurance Steel Orchestra and Sid Bowfin (a quirky classical violinist with burning satirical wit). 15 other performers will also be taking to the street throughout the day to keep the festive cheer strong! For more information including timings and locations of performers, head to: Croydon’s Christmas Street Celebration | Check Out Croydon

Nutcracker Trail
Launched at the end of November, this Nutcracker Trail has seen 10, six-foot traditional Nutcracker Soldiers placed around the town centre. Those who wish to take on the challenge of locating them all (and noting down their individual names) will be entered into a prize draw to win a Nintendo Switch and a bundle of games. Runners up will win shopping centre gift vouchers. Trail sheets can be picked up from the Information Desk at the Whitgift Shopping Centre. For more information (and a helping hand in the form of the exact locations of the soldiers 😉) head to: Croydon’s Christmas Nutcracker Trail | Check Out Croydon

Ice Rink
Whilst the BID themselves are keen to stress this is unlikely to rival the classic Somerset House ice rink experience (!)…it’s certainly a more affordable (and easier to get to) experience for locals! Launching on 9th December, the 12m x 6m synthetic ice rink will be installed for 4 days and the suggested donation of £3 per skate will be being given to Crisis. The 30 minute slots can be pre-booked via this Eventbrite here: Croydon’s Christmas Skate Tickets, Sat 11 Dec 2021 at 12:30 | Eventbrite

Advent Calendar Competition
For those who can’t make it along to the in-person celebrations but still want to experience some festive cheer…there’s the Advent Calendar competition. Over 24 days leading up to Christmas, 24 people will win gifts from businesses across Croydon. The range of impressive prizes include a Supercar Test Drive Experience and a pair of Crystal Palace Match Day Hospitality Tickets !

There are lots of other activities planned, including Elf Workshops, Santa’s Grotto and a Gingerbread Workshop, so if you’re heading into town on a certain date, and want to know what’s on, keep an eye on this events calendar: What’s On | Check Out Croydon
